Valley Vonka raises more than $3,700 for Literacy Alberni

Winners received their prizes on Oct. 2, 2024

This year's Valley Vonka fundraiser in Port Alberni raised more than $3,700 for the Literacy Alberni Society Raise-a-Reader campaign.

The Alberni Valley News teamed up with Coombs Country Candy to offer 1,000 milk or dark chocolate bars for the annual Valley Vonka contest, which is modelled after the classic book (and three movies) by Roald Dahl, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Three golden tickets were hidden among the bars, which were sold for a suggested donation of $4 each at 12 participating sponsors.

A draw took place on Wednesday, Oct. 2 for each of the golden ticket winners. Courtnay Rushfeldt found the first golden ticket and won $500 in gas and groceries. Sam Frketich found the second golden ticket and won two nights at Tigh-na-Mara Resort in Parksville. Dana Durmuller found the third golden ticket and won a big-screen TV from The Brick.

The winner of the colouring contest was also announced last Wednesday. Meela Russell, 7, won free chocolate and books for a year from Coombs Country Candy and Mobius Books. She had some colouring help from her sister, Keliah Russell.
