As September approaches, and with it, our Raise-a-Reader campaign, now is the perfect opportunity to consider offering your time to a worthwhile cause. Literacy Alberni Society is always open to new volunteers, and we have a variety of ways that you can provide a meaningful service in our community.
Our mission at Literacy Alberni is to provide literacy services throughout the Alberni Valley, and to support the formation of the reading habit. We do this by offering several no-cost services to the community.
One of the most valuable services that we offer provides free one-on-one tutoring to adult newcomers in almost every subject area. Some of our volunteer tutors have teaching experience; however, this is not a requirement for volunteers. Most volunteer tutors work with their learners once or twice a week for about an hour per session. We work hard to make sure that these schedules are convenient for both the tutor and the learner.
If you aren’t interested in working with an adult learner but you would still like to volunteer, we have plenty of other opportunities! Literacy Alberni accepts donations of used books, and we are always interested in new faces to help cover our front desk. Additionally, we strive to be a familiar presence at as many local fairs, events, and festivals as possible. We always need hands on deck to help set up and take down booths, and to greet people and tell them about everything we do at Literacy Alberni. Perhaps the most enjoyable part is handing out free books to children!
At Literacy Alberni, our doors are always open and we welcome all volunteers! If you’re interested in being a part of our team, but none of these options seem right for you, please email rebecca@literacyalberni.ca to chat with Rebecca, our Director of Literacy and Settlement Services. We would love to find just the right spot for you!
Literacy Alberni is part of Raise-A-Reader, a province-wide campaign to raise funds for literacy organizations.
