WATCH: Our Town celebrates Port Alberni’s real life heroes

Kids have fun at Gyro Recreation Park

Emergency responders turned out in force for the second Our Town summer event in the Alberni Valley on July 24.

The Port Alberni RCMP, P.A. Fire Department, BC Ambulance and Alberni Valley Search and Rescue Squad each had displays set up at Gyro Recreation Park, and children were able to ask questions and see the emergency vehicles up close.

Parks and recreation staff and volunteers also had games, crafts and snacks set up for the hundreds of children and families who came out on a blistering hot summer Tuesday night for the event. There were hotdogs from the Gyro Club and sno-cones from the Kiwanis Club, parachute games, an obstacle course set up by Twisted Willow Studio, facepainting, bubbles and chalk, the playground and a slip and slide on the hill side at Rec Park.

“Over the past 33 years, these events have been brought to you by Port Alberni Parks, Recreation and Heritage and the Kiwanis Club,” said Dan Washington, who has been with the Kiwanis Club for more than 30 years.

“We are very proud of how the Our Town programs have grown since they began in 1986 and we are very thankful for all the community support we have.

“Most importantly, thank you to all of the real life heroes who serve our community every day and who took their time to be here tonight,” he said.
