In Death of Persephone: A Murder, award-winning poet Yvonne Blomer displaces the myth of young Persephone in Hades’ violent underworld, challenging modern concepts of gods and humanity.
Blomer is an editor, teacher and mentor in poetry and memoir and served as the City of Victoria's poet laureate from 2015–2018. She will be the featured reader at the next Electric Mermaid live reading event in Port Alberni on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
In her most recent book of poetry, Blomer has turned her critical gaze to women and the women’s movement, the male gaze and the faulty depictions of women in mythology. The patriarchal myth of Persephone has been re-imagined as Stephanie, a girl of seven, is taken and raised by her Uncle H.
Electric Mermaid takes place at Char's Landing on Jan. 29, 2025. With host and emcee Derek Hanebury’s literary guidance, the featured reader and a host of authors through the open mic, this evening promises to keep poetry and prose fans engaged.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the open mic runs from 6-8 p.m. The suggested admission is $10. See www.charslanding.com/events to pre-register for the readers’ list and to select the optional Zoom link.
