A free concert at Port Alberni's Capitol Theatre this month will blend music from the land and from the heart.
The CBC's All Points West host Jason D'Souza and CBC's Vibin' host Rohit Joseph will guest-host an evening of live music and conversation on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Capitol Theatre. They will be joined by musical artist Tsimka, who will be sharing songs in her heritage Tla-o-qui-aht language, and DJ Michael Red, who will be creating soundscapes with recordings by Tsimka from her Tla-o-qui-aht home territory and Squamish territory.
Tsimka, rooted In Nuu-chah-nulth territories, morphs millennia-old oral and drumming traditions into contemporary sonic vibrations. Inspired by the dualities of the ancient and the modern, Indigenous and settler identities, Tla-o-qui-aht and English languages, Tsimka playfully reinterprets spiritual wisdom, natural elements and cultural stories to remind listeners of the rhythms alive in us all — breath, heart and joy.
Red, meanwhile, is a Vancouver-based music producer, composer, curator and performer. He is the co-founder and lead for Low Indigo, an ambient music artist under the name Souns and a former collaborator and touring artist with throat singer Tanya Tagaq. His projects and collaborations have a long list of other notable artists. Red is recognized as playing a critical role in shaping foundational sound system and underground electronic music culture in Western Canada, as both an event creator and DJ.
The event is open to everyone but registration is required. Tickets can be reserved for free at www.eventbrite.ca.
