Richard Grainger will be performing at Char's Landing on Oct. 3, 2024.

Richard Grainger, popular folk singer and musician, is travelling oversea from his native North Yorkshire in England for the first time in 10 years. He will be appearing at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

His appearance at Port Alberni is part of his tour of Vancouver island venues, with concerts also in Victoria, Nanaimo, Gabriola, Ucluelet, Sayward, Mill Bay, Deep Cove and Duncan.

Grainger writes big bold songs and is unique among English folk artists with a distinctive style deeply rooted in northern traditions. A gifted songwriter, he also delivers fresh interpretations of carefully selected traditional material.

On his guitar playing, he argues that he is purely accompanying the song, but he is clearly a master of many styles and tunings, giving him a unique sound. He composes earworm melodies with a narrative firmly rooted in the British tradition.

In his work with the highly versatile and gifted instrumentalist Chris Parkinson, Grainger's great lyrical power and inspired guitar playing are matched perfectly by Parkinson's magical and sometimes exquisite accompaniments.

Grainger’s repertoire of original, traditional, maritime, industrial and humorous songs, and uplifting romantic ballads, are coupled with an infectious enthusiasm for his subject, making him a stand-out singer in the folk genre and song-writing genius.

He has been featured on radio and TV, recorded 14 albums and worked with a diverse range of musicians and artists including Sir David Attenborough on his project Eye of the Wind.

Tickets for the Port Alberni show are available at www.sidedooraccess.com, at the door or by calling or texting Char at 250-730-1636.
