Victoria-based jazz vocalist Angela Verbrugge will be returning to Char’s Landing in Port Alberni for a special show featuring songs from vintage movie musicals.
Verbrugge will be at Char’s Landing on Sunday, May 26, where she will be joined by 35-year veteran New York City jazz pianist Ray Gallon, along with the Vancouver Island world-class jazz musician Ken Lister on bass.
Verbrugge says the show will take Port Alberni residents back to the golden age of the silver screen and on-stage musicals like West Side Story, Singin’ in the Rain, The Sound of Music and hits from the musicals that featured talent like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. She will also be playing some of her original songs.
“I first performed at Char’s Landing Hall two years ago when I was on tour with Miles Black,” recalls Verbrugge. “And on my way back from performing at the West Coast Music Society’s Tofino concert we stopped and did a popular tribute to Tony Bennett. Charlene is such an asset to our mid-island arts community and touring artists at large. It is a welcoming space with everything you need for a great night of music.”
Verbrugge is celebrating the release of her new album, Somewhere, which features a number of romantic standards. It came out in May on Origin Records. She has also been recently nominated for Jazz Artist of the Year in the Western Canadian Music Awards.
The show at Char’s Landing will take place from 6-8 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. The entry for Sunday Jazz Night is by donation. Attendees are welcome to bring their own snacks or supper. The beverage bar is open.
