A Port Alberni author presents The Chaotic Cycle of Emptiness, a poetry concert and book tour kickoff, at Char’s Landing on Friday, May 24 at 6 p.m.

Rachelle Mecca grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and attended Western University in London, Ont., studying media. Her degree influenced her approach as a writer: observant, critical, truth seeking, and left her needing to be more in touch with nature and herself.

Mecca travelled to Vancouver Island in fall 2019, and stayed long enough to get stuck here in March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic hit—”but where better to be in the world,” she asked as she fell in love with the land.

As a writer, Mecca found so many things to take inspiration from, being in this new land. Her poetry is influenced by her discovery of Vancouver Island’s character, her own insights and transforming emotion into eloquent and thoughtful verse, while challenged by the throes of the changed world.

Mecca has written three books of poetry. Her first book, Chaos of Tao, is a collection of poems chronologically placed from beginning to end of the year 2020. The subsequent two years resulted in the creations of Reverse Cycle, Repeat (2021) and Emptiness of the Way (2022). Rachelle is thrilled to have produced what she has named a trilogy, and to present her works of art through performance.

This first show at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni on Friday May 24 at 6 p.m. is the kickoff of a summer tour across Canada for Mecca. The event features the author as well as special guest musicians. Tickets are $20. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Mecca will be selling her books that night for a special event price.
