Alberni Valley Tyee Club president Carolyn Jasken, second from right, hands a cheque for $12,000 to John Newton from the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association. The money raised from the 2024 Port Alberni Salmon Derby will help the AVEA purchase a trailer and transport tank for its fish hatchery at McLean Mill National Historic Site.

The Alberni Valley Tyee Club has donated $12,000 to the Alberni Valley Enhancement Society (AVEA) to help with equipment for the McLean Mill fish hatchery operations.

The club's annual donation comes from proceeds of the Port Alberni Salmon Derby as well as the Tyee Club's ladder season.

"It's a little bit more than we usually donate," Tyee Club president Carolyn Jasken said.

The AVEA will put the money toward a trailer and transport tank to aid operations at the hatchery, said Scott Kenny. "It's mostly used in moving Chinook salmon collected in the fall from the river to the hatchery," he explained.

"We have just under 100,000 chum and 170,000 to 180,000 coho at the hatchery. It's been a really good year for us. We're pretty much maxed out with what we can do.

"It's been good," Kenny said.
