City of Port Alberni crews will begin installing barriers at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Dunbar Street early Wednesday, May 14, 2025. The barriers will prevent left-hand turns by motorists from 10th Avenue onto Dunbar Street in both directions.

The barriers are being placed after two serious incidents in three weeks where a cyclist and a pedestrian were hit by vehicles.

There will be temporary traffic impacts in this area as crews execute the work, starting at 7 a.m., a city spokesperson noted in a press release. This will include traffic delays, large trucks staging in the area for short periods of time and flaggers on site to help direct traffic safely though the work zone.
Work will be complete by day's end. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Once complete, signage indicating a “Traffic Pattern Change” will be installed ahead of the intersection in all directions and new road markings will be put down.

While the city recognizes that these alterations will impact the flow of traffic, they are necessary to reduce risk and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
