Crew members from Coulson Aviation anchor the Hawaii Mars in Sproat Lake on Monday, July 8, 2024, the first time the Martin Mars waterbomber has been on the lake since 2016.

The Hawaii Mars is back in the water at Port Alberni's Sproat Lake. It's the first time the Martin Mars waterbomber has been on the lake since 2016.

The iconic red-and-white waterbomber is being prepped for its final flight to the B.C. Aviation Museum in Sidney, B.C. The final flight is tentatively scheduled to take place Aug. 10, 2024, if all goes well.

In the meantime, the Sproat Lake Community Association has planned a "farewell" event for the waterbomber on Saturday, July 27. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sproat Lake Community Hall (9346 Bomber Base Road).

There will be live music, guest speakers, a concession and activities for all ages, as well as photo opportunities with the bomber and bomber merchandise available for purchase. There will also be door prizes and raffles.

Parking at the hall is limited, so visitors are encouraged to carpool, walk or catch a ride.
