A building on Third Avenue in Port Alberni has been hit by a second suspicious fire in less than a year.

Port Alberni Fire Department crews were called out at 2:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16 to a small structure fire at a building in the 3400-block of Third Avenue.

“It was a small area just inside of the door jam that was burning,” PAFD Fire Chief Mike Owens said. “It was a structure that had been previously damaged by fire last year.”

The building is located between Dairy Queen and the box culvert for Dry Creek. A more serious structure fire in late November 2022 caused damage to a corner of the building, which was closed up at the time but not abandoned.

Most of the damage from the Oct. 16 fire was contained to plywood used to secure the building from the 2022 blaze, Owens said.

Port Alberni RCMP Const. Rick Johns said fire investigators are still looking into Monday’s fire.
