The ADSS Storm senior girls are getting their do-over at Totem 69.
The girls beat Dover Bay 71-20 in their opening game of the basketball tournament on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025 and kept the momentum going with a 51-43 win over Belmont on Friday. The two wins mean they will face Pacific Christian School in the final at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11.
The two rivals met in the final in last year's Totem, with PCS taking home the trophy. The ADSS Storm are well positioned for tonight's final, says head coach Greg Freethy.
"We had 13 games before the (Christmas) break and we won all 13 of those," Freethy said. The Storm travelled to Victoria to play in the Christmas Classic in early December, a tournament they have attended "numerous times" in the past 30 years. "We were the first ADSS team to win that tournament," he added.
The two Totem games mean the girls have won 15 in a row.
In their opening game against Dover Bay every player scored, which was a goal the team set. The Storm had a higher than average shooting percentage as well. "It was one of those nights, I don't know what our shooting percentage was, but the ball felt like it went in a lot, even sometimes when it really wasn't supposed to go in," Freethy said.
Sarah Warman was player of the game for ADSS. A Grade 12 player, Warman picked up 11 points and Freethy said "that was honestly one of the best games she's ever played."
Against Belmont, ADSS was ahead 15-0 until the last four seconds of the first quarter when Belmont picked up a three-pointer to get on the board. The two teams played each other early in the season and Freethy said Belmont is traditionally a strong team: they beat them by nine points in their first meeting and eight points in Friday's contest.
Pacific Christian won their first game 61-21 against Wellington and 60-14 against Kwalikum to earn their way into Saturday's final.
Belmont finished third with a 55-49 win over Wellington, who finished fourth. Dover Bay finished fifth and Kwalikum sixth in the tournament. Kwalikum was chosen most sportsmanlike team by tournament referees, an award given in honour of longtime Totem referee Lem Wong.
