Rethinking the role of charitable nonprofits in community development is not just an opportunity but a necessity in today’s challenging socio-economic climate.

According to a 2023 Statistics Canada survey, the general public is the largest demographic that nonprofits primarily serve, comprising 42 per cent of the recipients.

To meet these needs, since 2021, the Alberni District Co-operative Association has been dedicated to giving back through its Community Investment Fund. Now in its fourth year, the program provides structured financial support to local organizations, ensuring that vital resources reach the groups that need them most.

Unlike traditional donation requests, which have long been part of the Co-op’s approach to community support, this fund allows organizations to apply for funding during a specific annual window. The applications are reviewed by the board, which evaluates each request based on its impact and the story behind it.

“We’ve always provided donations, but this program brings awareness to different ways we can give back,” says Alberni District Co-op general manager Dave Heinrichs. “At the end of the day, we want our community to know that the Co-op is a local business that looks after local groups.”

In 2024, the Co-op distributed approximately $38,000 through the fund, benefiting multiple community organizations. Recipients included the Port Alberni Backpack Program Society, which received $7,500, Wholesome Meals on Wheels with $10,000 and the Port Alberni Shelter Society, which received $5,000. Other organizations such as Literacy Alberni Society, Ku Kulus Crisis Line Society, Special Olympics Alberni and the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad also received funding.

“Anything related to food security has been top of mind because everyone is aware of what’s happening in society. Extra funds in those areas definitely make a good impact,” Heinrichs says.

2025 applications welcome now

The application process for the 2025 Community Investment Fund is now open, welcoming submissions until the end of April. The Co-op board will review submissions in May, with funding recipients announced in June. The goal is to continue strengthening the program while maintaining existing giving initiatives.

“We’re still working to make our current programs as effective as possible,” Heinrichs says. “It’s always nice to see different avenues where we can try new things while maintaining what we already do.”

As the Co-op continues its mission to support the community, the fund remains a crucial part of its investment in local well-being. By ensuring donations go where they're most needed, the program helps build a stronger, more connected community.
