Nearly 100 years of community, cooperation and giving back—Alberni District Co-op remains dedicated to keeping prosperity local.

For nearly a century, the Alberni District Co-op has been a pillar of the Alberni Valley community. Established in 1928, the Co-op was built on the foundation of local ownership, community investment and a commitment to giving back. As the organization nears its 100-year anniversary, its dedication to these values remains stronger than ever.

A history of local impact

The Alberni Co-op team has always believed in keeping profits local. Unlike traditional businesses, it's membership-owned, meaning that when the Co-op succeeds, so does the community. Through its equity and cashback model, members who support the Co-op receive a return on their purchases, reinforcing a cycle of shared prosperity.

Additionally, all community investment funds stay within the Alberni Valley, ensuring that every dollar donated contributes directly to local organizations, initiatives and projects. Programs like the Community Investment Fund have helped build stronger neighbourhoods, support local non-profits and create opportunities for residents.

In 2024, the Co-op fund distributed approximately $38,000 to community organizations including the Port Alberni Backpack Program Society, Wholesome Meals on Wheels and the Port Alberni Shelter Society, along with the Literacy Alberni Society, Ku Kulus Crisis Line Society, Special Olympics Alberni and the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad.

"We are fortunate to have many non-profits working hard to make the community a better place for all, and we feel fortunate to be able to help them in those efforts," says Alberni District Co-op general manager Dave Heinrichs.

Milestone achievements and looking ahead

Reaching 100 years is a rare milestone – one that speaks to the strength of the community-driven business. Over the decades, the Co-op has grown, weathered economic shifts and remained steadfast in its mission to support, invest and give back.

Their coming anniversary is not just a celebration of history but a testament to the enduring power of cooperation and community support.

As the Co-op looks toward the future, its focus remains clear: to continue being a trusted, locally owned business that puts people first. Whether through donations, partnerships or simply providing quality services, the Co-op is proud to be a cornerstone of the Alberni Valley and is excited to carry its legacy forward for generations to come.
