When Craig Bowerman retired from Bowerman Excavating after 27 years, he wasn’t ready to slow down. Staying active in Port Alberni—a place he calls “the best community”—remains a personal passion. "I didn’t want to sit still," he adds. Recognizing a gap in the Port Alberni market, Bowerman decided to start a new business: Broughton Storage.
“I heard people saying they couldn’t get space to store, and there was a lack of available storage units in the Port Alberni area,” says Bowerman, who officially opened the facility in December 2024. "It seemed like a good business to pursue."
Located in the heart of Port Alberni, Broughton Storage has become a highly sought-after space for residents and businesses, offering heated and unheated storage units for a variety of needs and budgets.
“Our smallest unit is just five feet deep and four feet wide,” explains Bowerman. “But our largest is 19.5 feet deep, 9.5 feet wide and eight feet high — big enough to fit your favourite car and keep it nice and warm.”
Security and customer service
Security is a major priority at Broughton Storage. “We have 10 video security cameras recording 24/7 throughout the site, a gated entry with a code reader and onsite caretakers,” says Bowerman.
The fully fenced facility also features concrete roadways, keeping dust at bay and ensuring customers’ belongings remain clean and safe.
Every unit is fire-protected and, in the case of heated units, equipped with forced-air heating to maintain air circulation. “By doing this, it keeps the air moving in each unit and not stale,” Bowerman adds.
With units ranging in price from $75 to $319 per month, "we offer a wide range of sizes and options to meet everyone’s needs and budget," says Bowerman.
Community-focused storage
“Being locally owned and operated, we go the extra mile for our customers,” says Bowerman. “With ground-level entry and fully paved surroundings, we’ve designed the facility to be as accessible and user-friendly as possible.”
While Broughton Storage is still in its first year of operation, Bowerman is optimistic about the future. “We’ve been filling up since we opened, and we look forward to many years serving the Alberni Valley and West Coast communities,” he says.
