60,000 still without power; wind warning continues across Vancouver Island

Winds expected to ease by Saturday afternoon and into overnight

An end is in sight for this week’s severe B.C. storm that led to far-ranging power outages and damage to dozens of buildings and homes.

Environment Canada continued its wind warning for Vancouver Island Saturday morning, calling for wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres-per-hour over coastal and north sections. In the eastern region, and Victoria, the national forecaster says winds will reach 70 kilometres-per-hour.

Winds of up to 80 kilometres-per-hour are forecast for west Vancouver Island.

But the storm is expected to ease below warning criteria starting in area surrounding Victoria and Campbell River starting in the afternoon. By Saturday evening and overnight, the rest of the Island will be in the clear.

Roughly 60,000 BC Hydro customers on Vancouver Island, Salt Spring Island and Galiano Island are still without power.
