Port Alberni will hold an Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 22 to launch a national cycling strategy that Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns has been working on.

The event, which is co-sponsored by Johns and Cycle Alberni, will take place at Harbour Quay from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We’re inviting everybody in Port Alberni, young or old, to bring a bike, or just come if you don’t have a bike,” said Cycle Alberni representative John Mayba.

The event will start with a group bike ride through the lower downtown area, and finish with a barbecue.

Volunteers will be serving up the “Earth Day Burger.” If you want to find out exactly what the Earth Day Burger is, come down to Harbour Quay to check it out. Festivities will also feature a live rock band.

“It’s something that’s not only going to be good for cycling,” said Mayba of the cycling strategy. “A bike strategy will eventually result in more funding coming to our city.”
