Alberni man dies in Hawaii cycling accident

A 65-year-old Port Alberni man has died in a cycling accident in Makawao, Maui.

A 65-year-old tourist from Port Alberni died Sunday morning after the bicycle he was riding collided head-on with a Honda Element in Makawao, Maui.

The Toronto Star has identified the man as Allyn Robert Parker of Port Alberni.

Maui police said the cyclist was traveling north on Makawao, about a quarter mile past Kee Road near Haleakala National Park, when he crossed into the opposite lane on a right-hand turn and collided with the southbound Honda, driven by a 69-year-old man.

Parker was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Honda was not injured.

The Star also reported that according to police, Parker was vacationing on the island with his wife, and they were part of a boat tour.
