A former E.J. Dunn Elementary School teacher was sentenced on Monday for possessing child pornography.

Following an RCMP sting operation in 2016, Daniel Shaen Oliver, who was arrested last June, has been sentenced to six months in jail and three years probation.

An investigation by the BC Integrated Child Exploitation Unit began in May 2016, when a covert online investigator, posing as a single mother of an eight-year-old daughter, was approached by Oliver, then 36, in an online chat forum known for child exploitation activity.

Oliver’s probation order includes the conditions that he must not access or possess unlawful pornography material, own any type of electronic device that can access the Internet and must not attend a daycare centre, school ground or playground where children under the age of 16 are present or can be expected. He is to have no contact with any person under the age of 16 or seek employment that involves being in a position of trust or authority towards persons under the age of 16.

In addition, Oliver must attend an assessment at the Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission in Nanaimo, and accept psychiatric counseling, and attend and successfully complete programming in relation to sexually offending behaviours, including a sexual offender program.
