Alert canine helps nab would-be burglars

A warning from an alert dog helped nab two alleged thieves in the 3800 block of Morton Street on Tuesday morning (Dec. 31, 2013).

A homeowner was awoken at 5:20 a.m. by his dog, which was alerted by the presence of two males.

The homeowner saw two men skulking about the alley near his home, one of whom was carrying a black garbage bag.

The homeowner checked his vehicle and found that it had been broken into so he called RCMP. Two suspects were arrested and taken into custody within minutes of police's arrival.

A 26-year-old Tofino man and a 24-year-old Port Alberni man facing charges of theft and mischief. One of the men is known to police.

The men are scheduled to appear in Port Alberni Provincial Court in Feb. 2014.
