City denies longer hours for Port Pub

The Port Pub’s application to extend liquor service until 2 a.m. has been denied by city council.

The Port Pub’s application to extend liquor service until 2 a.m. has been denied by city council.

The establishment’s—which has new ownership as of 2015—current hours of liquor service are 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday.

City clerk Davina Hartwell noted that while the new owner, Peter Wang, had been making an effort to improve the bar’s reputation, RCMP were still concerned about what longer liquor service could mean for the area.

“The RCMP has continued to express concern that  extended hours of service would increase calls for service to the police,” said Hartwell. The fire department also had concerns, she added.

“The chief fire prevention officer... has met previously with the owner and manager to identify some of the fire safety insufficiencies and help create a work plan to address them,” Hartwell said.

“To date those works have not yet been completed.”

Coun. Jack McLeman said he agreed with the staff recommendation to deny the application.

“It just seems to me that extra hours of alcohol serving down there at this moment would probably not be good for the neighbourhood and the people down there,” McLeman said.
