The warranty for the rubberized running track surface at Bob Dailey Stadium has been extended for an additional three years.

The Port Alberni track was constructed in 1992, but was resurfaced in 2013 by contractor Marathon Surfaces.

Since the resurfacing, Marathon Surfaces has made a number of repairs to the new track surface, including a sizeable repair piece in September of 2017.

In October 2017, the city of Port Alberni announced that they would be seeking a voluntary extension of warranty, as the current warranty ends in December 2018.

Parks operations supervisor Rob Gaudreault said during a Monday, Aug. 13 council meeting that he met with Marathon Surfaces in early July to take a walk around the track. Together, they noticed that even more degradation and tears have occurred since the last repairs in September 2017.

“We did come to an agreement of a three year extension on the warranty, and he is going to come before the end of the summer to do the current repairs that are there,” said Gaudreault.

Because they do not want to interfere with any of the summer activities happening on the track, repairs likely won’t take place until closer to September.

Despite the condition of the track, Gaudreault said there are no issues with public safety.

“It is starting to pull a little bit, so I’ve been monitoring,” he said.
