A cyclist walked away with only minor injuries after striking a semi truck last week.

RCMP responded to a collision between a cyclist and a semi truck on 3rd Avenue at Redford Street on Thursday, Jan. 18 just after 11 a.m.

Both the semi truck and the cyclist were travelling northbound on 3rd Ave. As the vehicles approached the intersection at Redford St, the light turned green. The semi truck made a right hand turn onto Redford St when the cyclist rode into the side of the trailer.

Witnesses described how the cyclist cut across Redford St up from the cross walk and rode straight into the slow moving semi truck’s trailer and ended up underneath the truck. Miraculously, the cyclist suffered only minor injuries.

Given the circumstances of the collision, the driver of the semi truck had no indication that there had been a collision and continued on their way. The driver did not know what had happened and is not responsible for the collision. The cyclist was ticketed for careless cycling, cycling on the sidewalk and cycling without a required helmet.

Police are looking to speak with the driver of the semi truck. If you were operating a semi on 3rd Ave. and Redford St. at the time, please contact Cst. Kenny of the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.
