Twenty six families are homeless after an early morning fire gutted their apartment building on Athol Street between Third and Fourth Avenues.
Firefighters from Port Alberni and Cherry Creek responded to the blaze.
The building was a loss though and firefighters could only stand by and watch it burn without letting it spread.
Police are diverting traffic around the area.
