A 20-year-old Port Alberni man received non-life threatening injuries after colliding with the windshield of a city bus on Beaver Creek Road.

On Saturday, Feb. 11 at approximately 8:50 p.m. the Port Alberni man was laying on his back while riding his longboard southbound on Beaver Creek Road near Pierce Road. The man was wearing all black clothing, no reflective materials and no helmet.

As the bus approached to turn onto Pierce Road, the man jumped onto his feet and collided face first with the bus’ windshield, shattering it.

The longboarder received only minor injuries to his shoulder and cuts to his hands. The sudden stop of the bus also caused non-life threatening injuries to a passenger on the bus who fell off their seat.

The crash caused the road to be blocked to all traffic for a short period of time as the RCMP and the Beaver Creek Fire Department dealt with the scene.

Another city bus was brought in and passengers were transferred to it to continue on their way.

The bus passenger, as well as the longboarder were transported to West Coast General Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Police remind the public to be cautious on roadways, the importance of wearing helmets and reflective clothing or materials.
