Crews prepare to secure a water taxi to a new dock off the breakwater at Harbour Quay on May 22

More than 1,000 passengers from the Holland America cruise ship Amsterdam gave the new wharf at Harbour Quay a workout on Wednesday when they came to Port Alberni for a day’s stop during a three-day repositioning cruise from Vancouver to Port Alberni and Seattle. A new ramp and three docks were set up off the wharf to accommodate the water taxis. New light standards were installed earlier this month in anticipation of the ship’s arrival.

This setup differs from the last visit in 2011, when the ship was docked at the port authority.
