School District 70 board chair Pam Craig and Port Alberni mayor Mike Ruttan were present to officially activate the new traffic signals at the Johnston Road and Helen Street intersection on Wednesday, May 10.

Macee Norlock, a grade 6 student from École Alberni Elementary, pressed the button to activate the crosswalk across from the school.

Alberni Elementary principal Laurie Morphet said the school sees a high volume of traffic with parents picking up and dropping off their children, and there have been a number of near accidents on the busy Johnston Road stretch.

“It’s been a long time coming,” she said on Wednesday.
