One person dead after Highway 4 collision near Coombs

BC Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation

A 42-year-old man has died after a collision on Highway 4 near Coombs on Jan. 6.

The crash involved a Dodge Ram pickup and a Chevy Aveo — the driver of the pickup truck was arrested at the scene and alcohol is being investigated as a possible contributing factor, according to Const. Mike Moore, BC Highway Patrol media relations officer.

The name of the 42-year-old man has not yet been released.

Police, fire department and BC EHS were called to the scene at approximately 5:50 p.m., RCMP reported.

“We are currently interviewing several witnesses in this early stage of the investigation,” Moore said. “However any witnesses that we may not have spoken with are encouraged to contact BC Highway Patrol in Parksville at 250-248-6111 and reference file 2023-37.”

RCMP reported the pickup truck crossed the centre line and hit another car. The driver of the car was killed.

CARS (Collision Analyst Reconstruction Service) attended to assist in the investigation, Moore said.

Drive BC reported the road between Hilliers Rd and the intersection of Highway 4 and Highway 4A was closed at approximately 6:20 p.m. It reopened shortly before 2 a.m.

Moore added that impaired driving related fatal crashes remain one of the leading causes of criminal death on Canadian highways and are 100 per cent preventable.
