Port Alberni saw a population decline of -0.4 per cent since 2011.

Statistics Canada released its 2016 population and dwelling counts early Wednesday morning. The numbers show that the Alberni Valley went from a population of 17,743 in 2011 to 17,678 in 2016.

British Columbia’s population has grown by 5.6 per cent since 2011. The province has hit 4.6 million people and Canada has exceeded 35 million. British Columbia is the sixth fastest growing province in the country behind Nunavut, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon.

According to the 2016 count, 13.6 per cent of Canadians live in B.C., which makes the province the third largest in Canada.
