The city of Port Alberni is about to lose a key member of its senior management team.

The Comox Valley Regional District announced on Wednesday, Aug. 1 that Scott Smith has been hired as the General Manager of Planning and Development Services. Smith is currently the city of Port Alberni’s director of development services.

City CAO Tim Pley confirmed on Wednesday that Smith has tendered his resignation, and the city will be looking to replace him in the coming weeks.

“He certainly leaves a large space to be filled,” said Pley. “He did a lot of things for us.”

Staff will look into whether or not Smith’s replacement will also be a director, or whether the role will be filled in a different capacity.

Smith, who has been working with the city’s senior management team for 18 years, was the city planner before he was promoted to his current role as director of development services in 2017. He still retained many of the responsibilities of the city planner, plus the added responsibilities of leading the city’s technical engineering services.

“He had developed into such an integral part of the team that he was promoted to director of development services,” explained Pley. “He will be very difficult to replace. And he will be very much missed by the municipality and the community.”

Smith starts his new role in the Comox Valley on September 17, where he joins former Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District CAO Russell Dyson. For now, he will continue his role with the city.
