Shoppers Drug Mart to host postal outlet

Canada Post will move one store up from the soon-closing Fairway Market to Shoppers Drug Mart in the 10th Avenue Plaza.

Southport residents won’t have to go far to access postal services as Shoppers Drug Mart will be the new location for Canada Post.

Currently located in the soon-closing Fairway Market, in the 10th Avenue Plaza, Canada Post will move one store over into the mall’s Shoppers Drug Mart.

Bijan Mahmoudi, Port Alberni Shoppers Drug Mart store owner, said after finding out about Fairway and the Canada Post closure, he notified Shoppers’ head office who approached Canada Post to inquire about hosting the services.

“Lots of Shoppers on the Mainland and on the Island do have post offices so it’s something our company is very familiar with,” Mahmoudi said.

The Canada Post will be located in Shoppers near the pharmacy where the cleaning and household products are currently placed.

“Because we have to build a post office...temporarily for the transition period the parcels will come to Shoppers and we will have a temporary spot for them until we build, which is going to take some time,” Mahmoudi said.

Fairway Market and the Canada Post will close on Jan. 28 and Mahmoudi said postal services should begin at Shoppers on Monday, Jan. 30.

Canada Post spokesperson Phil Legault confirmed that Shoppers Drug Mart will be hosting a postal outlet.

“We are working with [Shoppers Drug Mart] to determine the official first day of full operations, as well as any services which may be available beforehand,” Legault said.
