Port Alberni was host to the Islands Agriculture Show, which was a big success in helping to promote and highlight the Valley’s agricultural industry, marine production and food security.
“It was really beneficial to host the show here, the community showed what it has to offer,” said Heather Shobe, agriculture support worker with the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. “We’re really pleased with how everything turned out and grateful with everyone who came.”
Shobe said this year’s show, held at the Alberni Fall Fair Grounds, was the first year that marine production was highlighted.
Despite the weekend’s snowy weather, Shobe said the show still saw a good turnout.
“On Friday there were more than 500 kids from School District 70 who came out,” She said.
Alex Dyer, planner with the ACRD, agreed that the IAS was a success.
“We put our best foot forward in highlighting the opportunities we have in our region,” Dyer said. “It’s a good opportunity for the community to come together and showcase food production opportunities we have, not only in the Alberni Valley but also in the West Coast communities.”
He said hosting the IAS in Port Alberni allows for a wider agriculture community across Vancouver Island to have a better understanding about the potential in the Alberni Valley and West Coast communities.
“There were about 55 booths and most were from out-of-towners,” Dyer said. “The trade show offered sessions and workshops, which all had out-of-town attendees and they were all a great success in my opinion.”
