VOTER REGISTRATION

A By-election for one (1) Councillor for the City of Port Alberni will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024. Are you eligible to vote? Is your name on the current list of electors?

If you are not sure, you can find out by calling Port Alberni City Hall at 250.723.2146 or visiting 4850 Argyle Street between the hours of 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday [excluding statutory holidays].

The City of Port Alberni uses the Provincial voters list. If you are not on the list of electors, electors may register at any of the voting days, including advance voting opportunities. New electors who request a mail ballot will receive a voter registration form in their mail ballot kit.

RESIDENT ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS

In order to be registered as a Resident Elector, a person must meet all of the following requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • a resident of British Columbia as determined in accordance with section 67 of the Local Government Act for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;
  • a resident of the City of Port Alberni; and
  • not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law.

NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS

In order to be registered as a Non-Resident Property Elector a person must meet all of the following requirements:

  • not be entitled to register as a resident elector;
  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • a resident of British Columbia as determined in accordance with section 67
  • of the Local Government Act for at least 6 months immediately before the day
  • of registration;
  • a registered owner of real property in the City of Port Alberni for at least 30 days
  • immediately before the day of registration; and
  • not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in the election or be otherwise disqualified by law.

A person may only register as a non-resident property owner in relation to one parcel of real property in the City of Port Alberni.

If more than one individual is a registered owner of the real property, then only one of those individuals is entitled to vote, with the written consent of a majority of registered owners that are on the title including the person requesting registration.

If a corporation is on title with other individuals, or if an individual on title is holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust, then none of the individuals are eligible to be registered as non-resident property electors.

Persons qualifying as Non-Resident Property Electors may register at the time of voting by completing the required non-resident property elector registration forms. Two documents that provide evidence of the applicant’s identity, at least one of which must contain the applicant’s signature, must be provided when registering, along with the written consent of a majority of all registered owners if applicable. Valid proof of property ownership by way of a current State of Title Certificate or City of Port Alberni 2024 Property Tax Notice is also required.

LIST OF REGISTERED ELECTORS & REQUESTS TO OMIT OR OBSCURE INFORMATION

Beginning Tuesday, October 29, 2024, until the close of voting for the By-election on Saturday, December 14, 2024, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection at Port Alberni City Hall, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday [excluding statutory holidays]. Before inspecting the list of registered electors, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list, make copies or use the information included in the list except for the purposes of Part 3 – Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act.

An elector may request the Chief Election Officer [CEO] to omit, or obscure from the list of electors, their address or other information of the elector in accordance with section 78 of the Local Government Act. Submit your written request, made in accordance with section 79 of the Local Government Act, to the CEO before 4:00 pm on Friday, November 8, 2024.

OBJECTION TO REGISTRATION OF AN ELECTOR

An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act before 4:00 pm, Friday, November 8, 2024.

An objection must be in writing, may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the City of Port Alberni, and can only be made on the basis that the person whose name appears has passed away or is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the City of Port Alberni.
