In loving memory ~

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alf Thompson on June 21, 2024, at the age of 74. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, especially his loving wife Evelyn, daughters Amanda, Nicole, Amy, Samantha, and Caitrin, and grandchildren Latrell, Karissa, Brynn, Dawson, Cade, Indi, and Kai.

Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Alf settled in Port Alberni, B.C., where he worked in the forest industry for MacMillian Bloedel and wrote sports columns for the AV Times. His passion extended beyond writing—Alf could often be found at the arena coaching minor hockey or following the Alberni Bulldogs on the radio as "The Ace." His legacy includes organizing the iconic Christmas Bantam Tournament, where the stands were always packed, and being part of the team to bring Junior A hockey to Port Alberni. He is in the Hockey Hall of Fame and was voted "Man of the Year." If Alf coached you, he was someone you would never forget.

Alf's life was filled with adventures (too many to recount), but one constant joy was his annual vacation to Mexico with Evelyn. Their shared love for each other and travel created cherished memories.

Alf's philosophy which he followed for much of his life was: If you want to judge people by their worst moments, and their biggest mistakes, you won't like or respect many people. But if you chose to look at them and see their best qualities, and their best moments, you will be much richer in terms of friendships and your attitude towards life.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Friends and family will be invited to pay their respects and share their memories.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to volunteer your time and make a difference in your community—a fitting tribute to Alf's spirit.

We extend heartfelt thanks to all those who supported and cared for Alf during his 12-year battle with cancer. Rest easy, Coach, you will always be deeply loved.
