May 1, 1949 - August 3, 2019
Louise passed away on Aug. 3rd, 2019, in Victoria where she had lived for over 50 years.
Louise, the eldest of 5 children born to Pat and Don Gatenby, was born in Great Central Lake logging camp on May 1st, 1949. The family soon moved to Franklin River Camp, and lived there until 1960 when they moved to the Glenwood area of Port Alberni.
Louise suffered an aneurysm at age 15 which left her with physical and mental challenges. Nevertheless, she faced life with courage and dignity, never complaining, or asking, "why me?" She led a full life and lived independently until 2 years ago. She had many friends, volunteered for 25 years at the Volunteer Bureau, enjoyed Christmases with family in Williams Lake or Quesnel, had a series of much loved cockatiels and cherished her collection of Swarofsky crystal figurines. She loved watching baseball and was a dedicated Bluejays' fan.
As her sister Susan said, "She was dealt a lousy hand in the game of life, but she played it well."
Her sisters, Susan and Colleen, would like to say a heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Glenwarren Long Term Care Lodge who took such excellent of care of Louise for the final 1 ½ years of her life.
She was cremated and will be interred with her parents in Greenwood Cemetery in Port Alberni.
A celebration of life will be held in Victoria on Monday, Aug 26th starting at 7 pm. For details, please text her sister Colleen at 250 213 1188.
