May 10, 1937 – August 31, 2016

It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the passing of Bill Kanigan on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. It was a peaceful passing at home with his family at his side, which was his wish. Predeceased by his parents, Mabel and Fred Kanigan, his in-laws, Laura and Paul Samsonoff, brother, Harry, brother-in-law. Paul Samsonoff Jr, niece, Kathy Duley, and the father of three of his grandsons, Ron McGunigal. He leaves his wife, Olga; daughters Patty, Debby, Elaine, and son, Bob; sister. Verna (Bill) Keraiff; grandchildren, Kevin, Jared (Kylie) and Jordie McGunigal of Calgary; Riley, Michael and Madeline Kanigan of Port Alberni; and great grandchildren, Avery, Logan, and Peri of Calgary; along with several nieces and nephews and many friends. Bill and Olga, with their 4 month old daughter, Patty moved to Port Alberni in July 1957. Bill worked at Alpulp as a tester, then on the paper machines, and retired in 1993 from the Instrument Dept. They loved to travel – from camping trips on their RV, several trips to Mexico, Vegas, and Hawaii, also cruises through the Panama Canal, The Caribbean, Mediterranean, and the Mexican West Coast. Bill always told people to do what they liked to do before they were too old to do it. Bill and the family appreciated the daily visits from his Home Care nurse, Sherri and others, as well the help of Dr. Wendy Johnsen that enabled him to stay at home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alberni Athletic Hall or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. An informal Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 17th from 1 to 4pm at the Alberni Athletic Hall. Please bring all your memories and share.
