It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Brian Miskae on November 18, 2017.
Brian was born in Calgary, Alberta on October 12, 1945 and passed away peacefully at the Courtenay hospital in his 72nd year. He is survived by his loving wife Doreen; son Robert and wife Celeste of Maui, Hawaii; daughter Debra and husband John of Pahoa, Hawaii; grandson Kai of Honolulu, Hawaii; granddaughters Michelle (Brian) of Connecticut, Stephanie and Nicole of Victoria, Arianne (Justin) and great-grandsons Gavin and Dylan of Colorado; sister Merilee and husband Russ of Champion, Alberta, and many cousins across Western Canada. Brian was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Lee Miskae of Calgary, Alberta.
Brian was a wonderful kind man who was loved by all who knew him, as well as being an inspiration to so many. He came to know the Lord in 1983, when he moved to Maui. Brian's Christian faith was evident in all he did, and he found great joy in helping and serving others.
Brian had a long, fulfilling career as a Land Use Planner, beginning in Calgary, then moving to Maui, Hawaii in 1983. One of Brian's first projects on Maui was as a partner and project manager for a Canadian group who built a golf course in Kihei, Maui. Brian then worked mainly in government for the County of Maui and was Director of Planning for Maui County for many years. Brian and Doreen retired to the Comox Valley in 2005.
During his 23 years on Maui, Brian had many interests, including fun with family, enjoying his work ohana, and appreciating the beauty of Maui. He participated in drag racing at Maui Raceway Park with his son Robert, learned to fly at age 50, played golf when time allowed, was active in church, and always showed warm hospitality to his many friends and relatives who visited.
Throughout his life Brian has especially enjoyed travel, taking many trips to explore all of Canada and the US, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Hawaii. While living on Maui, Brian and Doreen returned to Canada every summer to visit family and friends.
During Brian's 12 years in Courtenay, he has enjoyed Vancouver Island by camping with his trailer, golfing, snowshoeing, and gardening. Brian has also been very active in his church and very appreciative of his church family. He leaves behind many special friends in Canada, US and Hawaii.
A memorial service will be held at Courtenay Fellowship Baptist Church at 2 pm on December 2.
Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served following the service.
