March 27, 1928 - December 31, 2020
With overwhelming sadness we announce the passing of Dora Sustersich.
Predeceased by her husband Stanley in 2007 after 52 years of marriage. Survived by daughters Wanda and Laurie, son Jim, daughter-in-law Esther, and son-in-law Terrell.
Dora was born in Podnanos, Slovenia. At a young age she lost her parents Paula and Aleš and siblings Ivanka and Jožef, and became the caregiver to her younger brother Rajko.
After WW2, Dora made a harrowing escape to Italy and was soon accepted as a refugee to Canada. After briefly working at a nurses' residence in Halifax, she travelled west to Port Alberni and found a job at K Charlie's shop. A few years later she met and married Stanley who also was a recent immigrant from a neighbouring village.
She helped build two houses and was a true homesteader with impressive ability to build, repair, or preserve pretty much anything.
Dora enjoyed nature and the outdoors. She tended her beautiful flower gardens and grew vegetables year round which were prepared into amazing meals that the family loved.
She treasured her friends of many years and looked forward to her coffee outings after church. She was an avid reader when not busy in the garden.
Forever in our hearts.
Sladko spavaj. (Sweet dreams)
