Born in Germany, Ed trained for 3 years as a Forest Technician and worked as a forestry surveyor. He immigrated to Canada in 1951, spending his first year in an Ontario bush camp. Ed started work at the Somass Mill in 1953 and was the lumber inspector working under the PLIB (Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau) until his retirement in 1992.

Ed loved the outdoors. If he was not hunting deer, he was hunting for firewood. He even made several trips to northern BC moose hunting. Ed was also a season ticket holder for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and really enjoyed going to watch the games. Ed was also a member of the Sunshine Club for over 20 years and was an avid crib player, spending every Monday at Echo Centre.
