May 20, 1931 – November 12, 2021
It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Erna Maria Bauer (nee Ekengren), born May 20, 1931, death Nov.12, 2021.
Erna is predeceased by her husband Leo, her brother Eric, and her parents, Helge and Karin Ekengren. She is survived by her daughters Diane Sirkia (Eric) and Christine (Kim Dobischok); sister Tina; grandchildren Luke, Lauren, Sophia, and Rhiannon; as well as nieces and nephews.
Erna was born in Vancouver, BC to Swedish speaking Finnish parents. She attended McGee high school, and worked as a dental hygienist and travel agent prior to her marriage in 1958, when she moved to Port Alberni, eventually returning to work as a travel agent at Turner Brothers Travel where she remained for 25 years. It was the right profession for her as not only did she enjoy many trips abroad, she enjoyed helping others with their travel dreams.
Erna was a cancer survivor, an active member of the Trinity Anglican + Lutheran Church, and a volunteer at the WCGH Ladies Auxiliary. She maintained contact with many friends over a lifetime and was known for her thoughtfulness. She was a gracious hostess and genial companion.
In 2014 Erna moved to Maple Ridge, where she enjoyed living at Willow Manor and being closer to her family. Eventually she spent her last few years at Dufferin Care Centre. She was loving mother, grandmother and friend, and rarely had anything bad to say. She will be missed by many.
A memorial service was held in Maple Ridge on November 27, 2021. Erna’s cremated remains will be interred in a graveside service officiated by Pastor Brenda Nestegaard-Paul, of Trinity Anglican + Lutheran Church, at Greenwood Cemetery, 5360 Josephine Street, Port Alberni, on March 10, 2022 at 1pm. Erna’s friends are welcome to join the family.
