Evelyn Frances Wade Born in a blizzard in a prairie homestead one hundred and three years ago, Evelyn passed away on July 12, 2016 in Port Alberni. An adventurous sort, she came to B.C. at the age of twenty-one, found work, and married a few years later to Archie Abernethy. While raising her two children, Evelyn volunteered with the Girl Guides and St. Andrew’s United Church. In the early 1960’s, Evelyn opened Nootka House Gift Shop which she owned for over thirty years. A love of travel resulted in trips to Europe, China, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and South America. By motorhome Evelyn travelled across Canada, to the Yukon and Alaska, always bringing back lots of pictures and videos. Predeceased by husbands Archie Abernethy and Bill Wade, Evelyn is survived by her children Heather Shave and Don Abernethy, her daughter-in-law Shirley Ann; grandchildren Bob Abernethy, Corinna (Mike) Oldale, Rhonda (Paul) Anstett, Jill (Rob) Fontaine, Scott (Jackie) Shave; six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and by Bill’s children Diane, Barbara and Alistair. The family would like to thank Westhaven Lodge for their care and attention over the past several years. An informal celebration will be held Saturday, August 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Port Alberni Lawn Bowling Club, 4255 Wallace Street.
