With great sadness, we announce the passing of Harold Gottfried Deederly, September 12, 2019 at 82 years of age. Harold was predeceased by his parents, Godfrey and Katie Deederly, brothers George, Edwin, Elmer, Raymond and Ernie, his sister Nellie and great grandson Reid (Mikey). Harold is survived by his loving wife Janet. Harold and Janet were devotedly married for over 60 years. Harold is also survived by his 3 children: Marty (Shawn), Sandi (John) and Alan, grandchildren: Nikki, Ryan, Amanda (Ryan), Kurtis, Tana (Aaron), Baillie (Mat), Brook and Mikaela, great grandchildren: Jadyn, Kaleb, Aria, Rustyn, Talan, Hunter and Fisher as well as numerous nephews and nieces who were near and dear to his heart.
Harold was born in Roblin, Manitoba but grew up in the farming community of Togo, Saskatchewan. He moved to Port Alberni when in his early 20's where he met Janet, the love of his life! The Somass Sawmill employed Harold for 42 years until his retirement. During his employment he acquired many friends who all knew him as "Shorty".
Always a farmer at heart, Harold was an amazing provider, passionate about gardening, camping, hunting and fishing, going on yearly Moose and Elk hunts with sons, family and close friends, then fishing, prawning and crabbing at Bell's Bay and gathering with family to process the bounty.
Harold loved to talk, would start up a conversation with anyone and was well known for his "Haroldisms" blunt catch phrases that would keep you chuckling until the next time you met!
In later years, you could find Harold at garage sales, searching for that rare "gem" or an item someone might need.
Family and friends meant everything to Harold and he was a kind man who would not hesitate to give "the shirt off his back". He will be sorrowfully missed by all those whose lives he touched.
In keeping with Harold's wishes, there will be no formal service, rather a private family gathering at a later date.
The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at West Coast General Hospital for their care and attention at this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Harold's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canuck Place of Vancouver would be appreciated.
