Harry Nielsen passed away peacefully at Echo Village on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the age of 95.

Harry is survived by his close friends Axel and Birgit Tilsted; James Tilsted; Anita Oosterom and her family; as well as many other friends.

Harry was born in Denmark, immigrated to Canada in 1951 and moved to Port Alberni in 1953. He was a welder/blacksmith by trade and took immense pride in his work. In 1958, Harry and Svend Rask started Port Machine Works. He retired in 1976, but was always there to help a friend work on a project. Retirement offered him twice yearly visits to Hawaii and sunshine, which he loved. He had a couple favourite sayings such as “oh my gosh” or “you gotta be tough!” Harry also loved spending time with his friends. Axel and Birgit, close friends of 60 years, were his caregivers the last 5 years of his life, visiting him multiple times a week for coffee or games such as bingo, as well as taking care of his affairs. He will be greatly missed.

A special thank you to the staff at Echo Village for the wonderful care they gave to Harry throughout the years.

Following Harry’s wishes, no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Harry’s memory to the Echo Village Bus Fund, 4411 Wallace Street, Port Alberni, BC V9Y 7Y5. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.chapelofmemories.ca.
