In loving memory ~
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ian R.G. Arklie after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents, Angus and Florence, and his brothers, Robert and James. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Karen, daughters Kristine (Jake) and Kimberly (Michael), sister Ruth (Scott) Brigley of Nova Scotia, sister-in law Joan of Newfoundland and many nieces and nephews.
Ian was born and raised in Botwood, Newfoundland, where he grew to love being on the water and near the coast. After high school, he spent 4 years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. After graduating at the age of 20, he drove to Regina, Saskatchewan the next day to begin his training with the RCMP. His career with the RCMP lasted 35 years. In his early days out west in B.C., he and friends began sailing, competing in many races, including several Swiftsure Yacht Races and a Victoria-Maui race on a 36ft sailboat. During that time, he also joined the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue.
Ian and Karen moved to Port Alberni in 1990 and spent many wonderful years together raising their daughters. They spent many days fishing on the canal, boating around Sproat Lake, and enjoying time with friends and family. He could usually be found working in the yard and enjoying his gardening or working on his latest wood working project. He continued with the Marine SAR, contributing to helping build the local unit, acquiring their current boat, and outfitting it so that the members could be kept safe when out on the water helping others.
After retiring from the RCMP, feeling too young to stop, he opened Pacific Rim Driving School. With Karen by his side, along with friend Ray, they had 12 wonderful years teaching people of the Alberni Valley, and beyond, to drive safely and defensively while on the roads. The school was one of his greatest pride and joys.
Throughout his life, Ian was known for his kindness, calmness, and patience in his daily teachings. He deeply valued the friendships he made, and family from near and far. A celebration of life for Ian will be announced at a later date.
