In loving memory ~
Jake van Kooten (also known as "The Pumpkin Man"), age 82 of Port Alberni, B.C., passed away on February 5, 2025.
Jake was born in Rysoord, Holland, immigrating to Canada in 1952 with his parents and 9 siblings, eventually settling in the Alberni Valley. Upon graduation, Jake worked at the local paper mill until retirement.
Jake met the love of his life, Elaine, in high school. They married in 1964 and had recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together they had two daughters, Karla and Kerri.
Jake was an avid gardener throughout his life, spending many hours tending his plants from greenhouse to garden. He felt joy sharing his produce with neighbours and his church family. When not in the garden, Jake stayed active lawn bowling and floor curling.
Many locals recognized Jake as the man who grew Giant Pumpkins, but he became an internationally respected grower when his 1536.5 pounder was world's largest in 2009, winning Jake the coveted Orange Jacket. In B.C., he was affectionately known as pumpkin royalty, mentoring others and providing seed to anyone willing to grow.
Jake was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church, singing on the Praise Team and greeting the congregation. His faith remained strong throughout his life and he was ready to join his heavenly father.
Jake is survived by his wife Elaine, daughters Karla O'Donnell (Kelly) and Kerri Perras (Troy), grandsons Clayton Elmes, Brandon Elmes (Rhea), Jared and Trent Perras, and great-grandchildren Tate and Ari.
A memorial service will be held at the Christian Reformed Church on Wednesday, February 12 at 2:00 pm. All are welcome.
