Bob has been a resident of Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville for the past 5 years. Bob was diagnosed with neuropathy many years ago and he fought hard to keep walking until finally his mobility gave out and he finally lost the ability to walk. Even with Bob's advanced years Arrowsmith lodge staff would occasionally mention to the family that Bob was there only resident that was not on any medications.
Unfortunately; complications from advanced dementias was the cause of Bob's passing.
Bob was born and raised in St. Boniface Manitoba. He was the oldest of six children born to James and Penelope Cummings. He was the beloved husband to his dearest wife Pat who passed in 2011. Bob was predeceased by his sister Majorie (Ted ), Brother Jack (Jean ), Edward,(Betty), and youngest brother Ron.
He is survived by his son James (Saskia) daughter Alison (William) grandsons Christopher (Vanessa), James (Camille). His darling great grandchildren, Audrey, Corbin, Evander, Wyatt and Chloe. Bob loved his children and would do anything he could to support and help out in any way he could. He also leaves his sister Patricia Kirk, sister in law Faye Cummings, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was in the Canadian Navy during the WW 2. After the war Bob was seeking employment and applied for a lumber salesman's position with Bloedel Stewart and Welch in Port Alberni. Bob was hired and moved to Port Alberni in 1946 taking up residence at a boarding house known as the Arrowview Hotel. Bob continued in lumber sales for MacMillan Bloedel right up to his retirement.
He was engaged to Pat at the time he accepted the job in sales. Times were different then and once settled in his job he started arranging their wedding. Pat came out by train from Winnipeg with her family and Bob had made all the arrangement for their wedding to take place in Vancouver. The reception was at the Vancouver Georgia Hotel. They then moved to Port Alberni to start their life together.
Bob was very active in sports and played soccer with the fellows from the Port Alberni social club. He was an avid curler and one of the founding members of the original Curling Club that burned down in 1962. He and George Folkard were very much involved with the planning and conception of the now Curling Club on 9th Ave. Bob was a past president and life Member of the Alberni Valley Curling Club, life Member of the Gyro Club of the Alberni Valley.
Bob of course was very supportive of his wife Pat and the Pat Cummings School of Dance established in 1952. Bob built props, painted scenery and did other various duties required with operating a dance studio including the accounting.
In 1976 Bob was very involved in the building of the new dance studio located on Athol Street. Bob enjoyed working with wood and building was one of his passions. As well Bob loved games, and poker was one of his favourites. Anytime was the right time for a game of cards.
Bob was a dedicated member ofTrinity Church. Bob touched the lives of many people with his smile and gregarious laugh.
Always enjoying a good laugh and time spent with family and good friends.
Bob will be greatly missed!
