March 16, 1935 - February 23, 2021
Julia Anita Balogh, born March 16, 1935, passed away peacefully in Nanaimo on February 23, 2021.
Anita was born in Vancouver to immigrant parents, the late Ed and Julia Helsing. In her early childhood, the family moved to a farm in Merville, B.C. She made the most of growing up on a small farm as an only child, and made lifelong friends within the Merville community. She graduated from Tsolum School in 1952, one of a class of 15 students.
After completing high school, she attended UBC to further her education. However, she soon met a dashing young man named Mike Balogh who convinced her to marry him, and they moved to Port Alberni in 1954.
Having taken piano lessons at an early age, Anita decided to continue that interest while raising their three boys. She completed her teaching diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1960, and spent the next several decades teaching piano to budding young talent in Port Alberni.
In retirement, Anita enjoyed getting out with Mike in the natural environment of Vancouver Island. They also discovered cruising later in life, and enjoyed visiting many locations around the world.
Anita was predeceased by her husband Mike in 2020, and her granddaughter Nikki in 2017. She is survived by her sons Allan (Kathy) of 150 Mile House, Steve (Louise) of Gatineau, Quebec, and Ray (Cathy) of Deep Bay, grandchildren Joe (Andria), Catherine, and Amélie, and great grandchildren Felix and Beatrix. She is also survived by many relatives in Finland and USA.
The family would like to thank the staff of Berwick on the Lake for making Mom comfortable in her last days.
