In Loving Memory ~
Karel was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, near the Polish border, in a coal mining and steel making city.
He left Czechoslovakia after the Soviet Union together with its vassal satellite countries occupied Czechoslovakia in August 1968 in order to put down the attempts to liberalize conditions in the country.
After completing an English language class in Brandon, Man. in April 1969 he moved to Port Alberni together with a few friends who were in the same class. Six of us piled into a $200 old Pontiac station wagon and moved to the West Coast to start our careers in logging. Karel being the only one of us who had a driver's licence, drove all the way.
He was an active recreational athlete who enjoyed playing tennis, hockey, skiing and was also very good at gardening. He built a lovely home at Sproat Lake where he lived with his wife Julie for a few decades in a circle of Czech and other Laker friends.
Karel really enjoyed fishing with John, Joe and his friends. We had great time together with Czechoslovakian group and their families.
When his wife Julie passed, her sisters Eleanor and Susan took really good care of him.
We have great memories of Karel. RIP
Tony, Pauline, John, Hana & Diane.
