Kenneth Charles Service

Kenneth Charles, known to some as Papa Service, Kenny, Puff Daddy, Mr. Service and Grandpa passed away in Comox, BC on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 65 years of age. His departure was sudden and a result of undetected cancer. His sense of humour and ability to get anyone going were qualities loved by his family and friends. He was a sincere guy, authentic, kind and to the point — always. He knew he was loved as he left us. He could tell by how many times his family held his hands and comforted him in his final days. Ken was born in Vancouver, BC on January 31st, 1951 and adopted by a Port Alberni family, Charlie and Geraldine Service. Growing up, Ken loved playing hockey. He was old enough to have survived the 1964 tsunami that flipped cars up onto their bumpers. After secondary school at ADSS Ken attended trade school in Dawson Creek, BC. He studied automotive repair and became a car painter, later an auto-body manager before buying his own shop in the Comox Valley where he raised his kids. Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Service (MacLean), father-in-law, Leith MacLean and his parents. Ken is survived by his children Matthew (Sylvia) Service, Laura Service, grand-daughter Emma Service, mother-in-law Edith MacLean, loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of long-time friends. A celebration of life will be held at the Native Sons Hall in Courtenay, BC on Sunday, Dec. 4th at 2pm. Memorial donations can be made to the Comox Valley Hospice Society, 2137 Comox Ave, Comox, BC V9M 1P2 or the Alberni Valley Hospice Society, 3088 3rd Ave, Port Alberni, BC V9Y 2A5.
